About Eleven Monkeys
Filmmaker, Photographer & Visual Storyteller
Eleven Monkeys is the creative film and photography studio of filmmaker, photographer and visual storyteller Johan Herder, based in the Netherlands and working internationally. This website is the international side of my visual work.
Johan creates cinematic films, documentaries, short films and photography, always looking for the story behind the image. His work is driven by curiosity, observation and a genuine interest in people, places and the world around him.
Rather than simply recording what is in front of the camera, Johan looks for the details, emotions and moments that give a story its character.
A cinematic approach to storytelling
For Johan, filmmaking and photography are closely connected. Both are ways of observing and communicating — through images, movement, sound, light and atmosphere.
His work ranges from documentary films and short films to portraits, travel films and photography, alongside selected commercial and corporate projects. Each project has its own character, but the approach remains the same: understand the story first, then find the right way to tell it.
From the Netherlands to the world
Based in the Netherlands, Johan works with people, organisations, entrepreneurs and companies in the Netherlands and internationally.
His work has taken him to different countries and environments, from personal documentary projects and travel films to portraits and commissioned productions.
Selected work includes projects in the Netherlands, China, Nepal, South Africa, Hong Kong, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Brazil.

Eleven Monkeys is the creative film and photography studio behind Johan's work.
The studio brings together filmmaking, photography and visual storytelling, with a focus on authentic stories, distinctive imagery and a strong sense of place.
Whether it is a documentary, a short film, a portrait or a personal journey, the aim is not simply to create beautiful images, but to create something with character, atmosphere and meaning.
